What Professional Development or support services are available?

School ADvance provides basic training as well as an ongoing implementation network for districts who are implementing the Administrator Evaluation System. In addition, GrowthPLUS provides training and support to help districts align their teacher and administrator evaluation processes with overall district assessment and improvement systems. GrowthPLUS is available to all Michigan districts regardless of which state approved teacher and/or administrator evaluation tools selected by the district.

A. School ADvance Basic Training Package: Two-day on-site or drive-in training for all administrators who will be evaluated or will evaluate others with the School ADvance System. The Basic Training package includes:

  • All School ADvance evaluation rubrics, tools and resources
  • Unlimited access to Web-based refresher training modules
  • Examples of evidence and “look for’s”
  • Practice with rater and inter-rater reliability
  • Guidance for customization, prioritization, weighting, and improvement planning.
  • Evaluation cycles and implementation phase-in
  • Self-assessments and formative profiles
  • Performance dialogues and conferencing
  • Collection and use of evidence: observations, demonstrations, and feedback
  • Student growth data
  • Summative ratings

B. School ADvance Implementation Network: A Capacity Building Support Network for District Facilitators/Coordinators of the School ADvance Administrator Evaluation System.

School ADvance seeks to empower districts to build their own capacity for implementing and managing the School ADvance Administrator Evaluation System. Participants in the Implementation Network will be developed as facilitators or coordinators for their districts, eliminating the need for costly ongoing or extended training provided by external trainers after the basic training. The annual subscription covers 1-2 district representatives. Subscription covers:

  • Two drive-in clinics on the School ADvance Administrator Evaluation System
  • Two webinars
  • Two on-line support sessions
  • Limited phone or on-line consultations
  • Shared bank of models, tools, and resources
  • Discussion forum
  • Shared data and feedback for continuous improvement

C. School ADvance Board and Superintendent Basic Training: One-day training and ongoing support for superintendents and board members

While all of Michigan’s requirements for administrator evaluation apply to superintendents, the process for school board evaluation of the superintendent is different than that for other district administrators. This training provides board
www.gomasa.org/school-advance members and superintendents with a manageable process for assessing superintendent performance based on standards of practice and district goals and priorities. The training is sensitive to the unique, but mutually supportive, roles of the board and superintendent and includes:

  • The superintendent evaluation cycle and process
  • Guidance for customization, prioritization, weighting, and improvement planning.
  • Self assessment, documentation, feedback, and results
  • Ongoing performance and improvement dialogue
  • The process for achieving consensus ratings

Note: Under Michigan statute, all persons who contribute to a teacher or administrator evaluations (including the superintendent) must be trained in the evaluation model.

D. GrowthPLUS: Design and Support Network for a Comprehensive District Educator Evaluation System

The GrowthPLUS network supports the implementation of effective evaluation systems in Michigan districts regardless of which teacher or administrator evaluation tools the district adopts from the state approved list. Participants are district representatives (1-2 per subscriber district and may be the School ADvance Implementation Network district representatives) who are responsible for designing, developing, facilitating, supporting, and evaluating the local district educator evaluation system.

GrowthPLUS offers a fully integrated and research based framework for local educator evaluation systems using any of the state approved evaluation tools. Participants will receive training and support for building a solid local infrastructure for educator evaluation that meets all state requirements while fostering learning, growth, and adaptation. The annual subscription covers 1-2 district representatives. Subscription covers:

  • One drive-in clinic on the characteristics of an effective educator evaluation system
  • One drive-in clinic on implementing the state VAM/Growth Model and a local district growth model
  • Two webinar implementation and support sessions
  • Design manual for effective evaluation and growth assessment practices
  • Tools and resources for local facilitators
  • Limited phone and on-line consultations
  • Discussion forum
